Wildlife “Services” & Farm to Fridge tour update ~ May 12, 2011 ~ All Things Vegan

Did you know that 10 non-target species are trapped for every targeted species? Most of these animals are maimed or fatally wounded. Documentary filmmaker Vanessa Schulz shares this and other disturbing facts with us about the trapping industry. We discuss the government agency, Wildlife Services (formerly Animal Damage Control), an agency with the primary purpose of killing 4 million wild animals a year with taxpayer dollars on public lands. Vanessa also gives us an update on her film in progress, “Lost Dogs,” which uncovers the epidemic problem of Chile’s homeless pet population and explores the extraordinary lives of street dogs and the activists who risk everything they have to protect the dogs. In this episode, we air Part 1 of our interview with Vanessa. Part 2 will air June 14.

We talk with Phil Letten, of Mercy for Animals, during the Farm to Fridge Tour. The tour stops in major cities in a multi-media truck showing the Farm to Fridge video, and they talk with the public about why they should boycott the cruelty of eating meat. According to Phil, major national polls have shown that well over 90% of Americans are opposed to cruelty to animals, including farmed animals, “It’s a matter of awareness and people understanding that when we eat meat we are supporting cruelty to animals.”

This month’s vegan spotlight: Dick Gregory, comedian, civil rights activist, animal advocate, and author.
