Jake Conroy of the SHAC 7 reflects on prison and activism, plus we talk with lauren Ornelas about the Food Empowerment Project

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to spend time in prison when you felt completely innocent of any crime? Our guest in this episode, Jake Conroy, found himself in exactly that situation. He was convicted under the controversial Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act as part of the SHAC 7, and spent 3 years in federal prison. We spoke with Jake at the Resistance Ecology Conference at Portland State University.
SHAC stands for Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, and refers to Huntingdon Life Sciences Lab, which tests products on animals and kills 500 animals a day, including dogs, cats, monkeys, and rabbits.
Jake and the other activists operated a website that reported on and expressed ideological support for protest activity against Huntingdon and its business affiliates. HLS has been exposed in five undercover investigations revealing vicious animal cruelty and sloppy, fraudulent science. Among other atrocities, workers were exposed punching 4-month old beagle puppies in the face and dissecting a live monkey, as well as falsifying scientific data.

lauren Ornelas
At the Resistance Ecology Conference, we also talked with lauren Ornelas, founder and Executive Director of the Food Empowerment Project. The Food Empowerment Project encourages compassionate and healthy food choices by spotlighting the abuse of animals on farms, the depletion of natural resources, unfair working conditions for farm and slaughterhouse workers, and the unavailability of healthy foods in communities of color and low-income areas. They even have a “Chocolate List” app, which analyzes companies that make vegan products containing chocolate, to find out if they source their chocolate from areas of the world where slavery can still be found.
