Chimps, Inc.,  a Chimpanzee sanctuary in Central Oregon, welcomes new resident CJ. And a report from YEA Camp!

In this episode, we talk with Marla O’Donnell of Chimps, Inc., a sanctuary in Central Oregon that shelters abused or abandoned chimpanzees that were part of the entertainment industry or pet trade. Chimps, Inc. recently took in a new resident, CJ, and Marla tells us CJ’s story and gives us an update on how she’s fitting in with her new family.

We also talk with Bend resident Heather Kennedy, fresh from her first year as a camp counselor at YEA Camp, a fun and enriching vegan leadership summer camp for teens. And Paul Seymour sings about what will happen, “When the World is Vegan.”

Earlier this summer, CJ (Calamity Jane), a privately owned “pet” in Las Vegas, escaped her home along with her companion Buddy. They made their way to a suburban neighborhood. Unfortunately, law enforcement officials were able to tranquillize CJ, but not Buddy—who was tragically shot and killed when he was deemed a threat to humans.

We talk with Sanctuary Director Marla O’Donnell of Chimps, Inc. to learn the story of how CJ made her way to become a permanent resident of Chimps, Inc.

Marla started out at Chimps, Inc. as a volunteer, and after 8 years of constant dedication to the chimps, she recently became Sanctuary Director.

In spite of her recent trauma, 13-year-old CJ seems content in her new home and has been welcomed by the other Chimps. Raised in a human environment, she enjoys looking at magazines, playing with squirt guns, dolls, and tape measures, and eating a variety of fruits and veggies.

Heather Kennedy had the opportunity to be a camp counselor this past summer at YEA Camp, a fun and enriching vegan leadership summer camp for teens. She gives us a day in the life view of camp and reflects on what she learned and the relationships she formed. Outside of camp, Heather is a Zine artist and active in many social justice issues such as AIDS awareness. She loves babying her rescued chickens.
